In the likely event of a zombie apocalypse, the first thing
I would do is gather as much information about the zombies as I could. There
are many varieties of zombie, and identifying the properties of a particular
zombie virus is extremely important. One of the most important features of a
zombie is whether or not it can eat other zombies. If they can, I have an
advantage because, while the zombie population would last longer, the zombies
would be much more likely to attack their shambling brethren than a human in a
healthy sprint. If they, as in most depictions of zombies, do not eat each
other, I can also use this to my advantage. As zombies begin to outnumber
humans, the non-cannibalistic zombie will quickly run out of fresh humans to
eat. This means that any surviving humans, as in me and a few lucky others,
will have to hide more effectively because we will be actively hunted. However,
we will not have to hide for nearly as long because the zombies would quickly
due without food.
The second
and equally important thing I would do in the event of a zombie apocalypse is prepare
early. At the first hint of disaster I would quickly gather up double the provisions
and ammunitions I think I would need: about six months would be ideal.
Provisions would include nonperishable food, water (enough for drinking and
modest bathing), a radio and other basic survival tools such as a first aid
kit. I would also get cinder blocks and mortar to permanently seal the windows
and secure the door of my basement. Then it would be time to wait and play
checkers while me and anyone else with me waits out the apocalypse.
