My Plan for Survival in the Zombie Apocalypse
In the devastating incident of a zombie apocalypse (although I do admit such an event would be an interesting departure from the norm), I would model my survival plan after one of the greatest zombie/horror movies ever made: Dawn of the Dead (and no, I'm not talking about the 2004 remake; the original 1978 version directed by the legendary George Romero will always rank supreme to me). This terrifying film, at least for the time period, depicts Romero's vision of a world in which zombies have overturned society and human civilization as a whole. In the movie, reanimated dead beings begin to terrorized society when an a pandemic of mysterious origins sweeps across human populations. The "zombies," as these living dead are called, prey on human flesh, ravaging entire civilizations. To make matters worse, if a person is bitten by one of these monsters but still manages to survive, he/she will eventually transform into one of these mindless creatures, intent in feasting on human victims. The movie is set in the United States and chronicles the story of a group of weary survivors in the weeks following the zombie apocalypse. The survivors, escaping the chaos of zombie-infested Philadelphia by helicopter, eventually take refuge in a shopping mall, which becomes their permanent sanctuary throughout most of the remaining movie. I believe that, in the case of a zombie apocalypse, the mall would be the perfect place to barricade oneself against the dangers of a zombie-filled environment. Most of the basic necessities that a person needs to survive, such as food and water as well as other items, are located within the safe walls of a mall. Although these essentials can be found in a grocery store or supermarket, these buildings would be too small and vulnerable to permit effective defense and substantial safety. If a zombie apocalypse were to occur, I would first gather supplies that I would need, such as food, water, a flashlight, some matches, etc. I would then attempt to locate a surplus store in the turmoil of post-apocalyptic Lexington and stock up on all the weaponry and ammunition that I would need to defend myself against the zombie hordes. Finally, I would take refuge in Fayette mall, bringing as many survivors as I could as well as killing as many zombies that would stand in my way. Once in the mall, I would clear the space of any lurking zombies and remain there until forced to leave. In the event of a food, water, or ammunition shortage, I would send search parties to gather the needed supplies.
