Too long have I awaited the day when I can lay out my preparations in their full glory before someone without them thinking that I should be better off making preparations for my move to a mental hospital. Zombies are a fickle thing, different portrayals of the undead call for different game plans; so one must become well versed in all of the important literature on the subject. I'd recommend at least a cursory reading of Max Brook's Survival Guide and The Zombie Combat Manual, they harbor a wealth of insight on the topic and run through the pros and cons of most situations you could find yourself in during a Zombie apocalypse.
At the outset of an outbreak I think I would retreat to my own home after seeking out provisions. People will be making runs on the grocery stores and supermarkets so it's best to just hit all of the houses in your immediate area, while the people are out 'shopping' you can have your pick of any of their supplies. I would make the necessary calls to assemble the people I deem most valuable to me in this situation to by abode and set about building the fortifications that will turn my it from a suburban domicile to an impenetrable fortress. Board the windows, dig a moat, tear down the deck, put obstacles in the moat, barricade the doors, fill the bathtubs with the last of the potable water, and destroy the staircase. With our persons and provisions locked up tight in the second floor of my house, we will be able to last out quite a while while the chaos rages below and around us.
I would have a fortress mandate for evacuation in less than 2 minutes, every man, woman, and child having a pack and a weapon and ready to run. I have a .22 rim-fire and about a hundred shells that would take and incredibly good shot to put down a Zed with. I do not possess the skill, but I'm sure there will be those in my party who do. The rest of the weapons we have are a Twelve Gauge shotgun with about another hundred shells and various gardening and household implements. I will ask my recruits to supply our arsenal if they can, but you can never count on others outside of yourself.
In the event of a supply shortage or our base being overrun, we would quickly flee through the rear of my house and using road maps of Lexington, cautiously make our way towards Athens-Boonesborough. The concentration of Zombies in the country will undoubtedly be less and I will be able to outfit at least ten people with the necessary equipment to survive in the backwoods out of my own home. Raiding farmhouses and foraging in the woods we will move indefinitely southward until we can reach the relative isolation of the Red River Gorge. Always checking our hand-crank radio for broadcasts, we would eventually find help or be the last people in the greater Lexington area.
