Plugged In

It seems as though every month a new gadget is released that will somehow improve the quality of our already plush lives. Faster email. More detailed maps. Weather to the minute. All of these innovations are marketed under the guise that we as consumers and citizens of planet Earth need these updates on already existing devices to make us happy. I believe that all of these advances, coming so quickly have changed the way that we view the world and how we believe it works. The concept of quite time is gone. We as a society must be plugged in at all times. If I don't respond within 20 minutes to a text message I feel obligated to explain that its not personal but I was busy. I hate being at the disposal of a device that makes it seem like I am reachable 24/7. I believe that while technology has brought many positive advances to society, it is to the detriment of society that it is possible at any minute of the day to access whatever ones heart desires. I hate people who say things like this but oh well, there is something I can't quite put my finger on but i feel that technology (i.e. smart phones, advances computers) is the beginning of the end for safe societies. I think Einstein once said  "I don't know what weapons will be used in World War three, but in World War four people will use sticks and stones." Lord, now I sound like my grandparents. How did I get from faster email to this?
Having said all of this, I do appreciate and enjoy the richness that technology adds to my life.
