Behold: The Great Distraction

While I ain't exactly one to judge the condition of society as a whole, technology, I'm forced to admit, has had kind of a negative impact on me personally. Don't get me wrong; I LOVE technology, but it just distracts me way too much at times.

I'm already very easily distracted. And despite what some may claim, the sole purpose of technology (at least, the kind of technology that I assume the assignment intends) is to distract and entertain. I get swept up in TV, social media, and the internet all too quickly, and I will often emerge from my digital cave to find that schoolwork and chores have been piling up around me. When I first started high school, I was just opening up to various new kinds of entertainment technology, which combined with my newly increased workload to create the perfect storm of unproductivity. I'm... not entirely proud of my grades freshman year, and I have to admit to myself that technology might be to blame. Even now, as I'm typing this post, I have the urge to switch tabs and take a peek (just a little peek! I swear!) at Tumblr. But of course, I know that that little peek will result in clicking a link, then another link, then another link, and then I'll eventually end up on TVTropes and my whole night will be wasted.

...And behold, my peers, you just saw me make my point right then and there. To try and prove myself wrong, I just attempted to take a speed glimpse at Tumblr. That was 10 minutes ago. Someone embedded an interesting YouTube video. Anyways... this all makes my point perfectly. Technology is a giant, unavoidable distraction. While I don't dare trod on any toes by speculating on its overall societal effects, as I said before, I do know that it gives me a hard time when I'm trying to do homework. For me, that's a major negative effect.
