Ben Evers

Hello, Mr. Logsdon, my name is Ben Evers and I am 16 year old Junior here at Henry Clay. I have red hair, green eyes, and I am around 5'10" in height. As for athletics and other hobbies and physical characteristics aside, I play baseball, run cross country, and play the guitar and piano. I also enjoy rock music (especially hard rock and punk), movies, video games, and science, including various science-fiction movies, books, and comics. Although I do not usually like to divulge personal information about my life and future goals, let me begin my introduction with some of my background: I was born on November 8, 1995 in Galveston  island on the east coast of Texas. I remained in Texas my entire life until I moved to here (Lexington, Kentucky) in July of 2009, the summer before my eighth grade year when my dad decided to acknowledge the University of Kentucky's offer and assume the position as head of the Markey Cancer Center. Although he had been relatively content with his job at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, the arrival of Hurricane Ike in 2008 proved to be a devastating blow to the entire Galvestonian community, including UTMB, so it was only in our best interests that we moved while we still could. At first, I was reluctant to leave Galveston, the place where I had been born and raised for thirteen and a half years, as I still considered it my home. But after about a year in Lexington, once I had made some new friends at The Lexington School and become generally accustomed to my new environment, I found Lexington to be a far more stable and amiable environment than Galveston had ever been, and I realized that I could finally call this place home.

I have come a long way in the three years since eighth grade; I've met new people, developed new interests, and furthered old interests, but throughout all these years I have remained devoted to my academic studied. This year I plan on obtaining straight A's in all my class for both semesters, thus maintaing a sufficiently high GPA. I will also strive to score 5's on all four of my AP tests, achieve exceptional scores on the college-entry testssuch as the PSAT, SAT, and ACTand succeed in making the variety team in cross country. Additionally, I will continue to participate in other extracurricular activities, like volunteer work, clubs, and leadership roles, in an efforts to diversigy my resume. I don't know if I can live up to all of these goals, but I can try.

The best, or most meaningful, part of my summer vacation this year was probably my vacation to Alaska. My family and I had always wanted to visit Alaska, and we'd never been on a cruise before, so Alaska seemed like the perfect place for a vacation. The vacation was fun; Alaska was rainy and somewhat cold, which was odd for me considering it was June, but I had a good time. Other that that, my summer was pretty uneventful. Like many previous summers, I had unrealistic aspirations for this summer, setting too many improbable goals that proved difficult for me to accomplish. However, I accomplished a few of these goals and, like other summers, at least I wasn't in school.

Being a superhero fan, and having spent parts of my childhood obsessing over one superhero after the other, I have considered on many occasion what type of superpower I would most prefer. If given the chose, Iwould choose to have powers similar to those of Captain Atome and Doctor Manhattan of Watchmen, with which I would have control over all physical matter down to the atomically level.

As I have previously mentioned, and as you probably have noticed from my interest in superpowers, I am huge science-fiction fan. I envoy most any type of science-fiction materialwhiter it is a book, movie, video game, or comic book. In fact, I love science in general (my two best and favorites school subjects are math and science). I also love music, mostly rock and pop from the 50's through the 90's, but I do like some modern rock. When it comes to musical preferences, contemporary songs and artists just don't interest me. Movies geek me out as well. Here again, I prefer older classics, like Dirty Harry and Pulp Fiction. Finally, I am a major video game geek. I play most anything, from shoot-em' up styled action games, like Call of Duty, to RPG games, like Skyrim.

I chose this lab setup for my picture since it respresents my ambtion to one day major in the scientific and/or medical field.

As for my favorite website, I enjoy Popular Science Magazine's website as it offers a variety of interesting scientific articles. http://www.popsci.com/
